Government
Gaining its independence from France on August 11, 1960, Chad is a republic which means that there is a leader of the country instead of a monarch. Its legal system is based on a French civil law system and Chadian customary law. The president is elected by a popular vote for a five year term and then the prime minister is then picked by the president.
